Understanding Overtime in Zambia (2024)

  1. A normal working day in Zambia is eight hours, with weekly hours not exceeding 48 hours (60 hours for watchpersons/guards).
  2. Work done in excess of normal weekly working hours is considered overtime and compensated at a minimum of 150% of the normal hourly wage rate.
  3. To calculate hourly rate, monthly wages are divided by 208 hours (some banks use 240 hours for loan calculations).
  4. Employers may exceed normal working hours with employee consent, provided weekly hours don't exceed limits.
  5. Holiday and special overtime work may be compensated at 200% of the normal hourly rate.
  6. Overtime is considered part of monthly wages for some purposes, such as loan applications.

  • Normal Week: Maximum 48 hours
  • Guards/Watchmen: Maximum 60 hours per week
